going to get things going so high-def doppler radar picking up on the rainfall right now. it's been fairly light but that's about to change as we are going to see that band move onshore. that one will come on this morning, then maybe a break, and scattered showers. just for frank and michelle right here that band is going to come onshore with heavier rainfall and maybe even some thunderstorms. that sounds very exciting! if you are heading out the door, we have mostly cloudy skies and temperatures fairly mild. mainly into the 50s outside in most spots although we have 49 degrees into santa rosa. by the afternoon those highs running into the 60s. elizabeth, don't you wish you could be there with them? it's going to be so much fun. >> perfect ice skating weather. we love it! thanks, lawrence. outside right now, as you mentioned it's still a little slick in some parts of the bay area. here's a live look at westbound 580 coming towards 680 and the dublin interchange not too bad. it's getting a bit busy on this friday morning now that we're past 5:00. drive time only 14 minutes

between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. so not too bad so far. eastbound lanes of highway 4 shut down at this hour. you will have to use a detour right there at loveridge. cones get picked up around 5:0. westbound okay. nimitz 880 through oakland a quick trip between hayward and downtown, no delay towards the airport and coliseum. farther south smooth ride past towards milpitas and 237 so the silicon valley commute sof to a nice start. of course, a little wet outside, wetter throughout the day so bart is a good option. all trains including those heading towards downtown san francisco are on time. back to you. >> thank you. some breaking news this morning. hostess says it's going out of business. the maker of cupcakes, twinkies and dingdongs announced the decision in the past hour. it follows a strike by thousands of workers across the country. anne makovec reports from outside a hostess store on san

leandro. i'm look -- i'm looking on my twitter universe and it's going viral. >> reporter: i got off the phone with hostess and they say it was a difficult decision for the company to make but they did file a motion with the u.s. bankruptcy court to liquidate its assets so the store right here could be one of the last. we could see stores close as early as tuesday is what i'm told. the iconic bakery says they came to the decision after one of its largest unions started a nationwide strike that crippled operations. hostess closed three plants earlier this week and threatened employees they would shut down if they didn't go back to work. workers ignored the threat and now 18,000 workers will be out of a job. >> cupcakes and twinkies and

the bread, they made good quality stuff, good quality products. we hate to see it come to an end but enough's enough. >> reporter: the union rejected the contract offer from hostess in september. workers say the company stopped paying their pension and they wanted paycuts of almost 25% so they said it was just too much but again, a company said they couldn't keep up with the strikes and workers not going back to work. he noted all baking at all facilities has ceased so there's no more production of any of these products as well as company representative said again hard decision hard to keep up with production. live in san leandro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. a birthday dinner in san francisco led to the arrest of a man wanted for violent crimes in oakland. an off-duty oakland police officer was out on van ness avenue at a steakhouse when he saw a wanted man walk in, recognized him and called oakland police. they worked with san francisco

police to arrest the man as left the restaurant. he is wanted in connection with some violent crimes. >> shot most of the people in oakland as of late his wife was just a shooting victim in a retaliatory shooting in which she was shot eight times while picking up her kids in oakland a couple of weeks ago. >> oakland police have been working with federal officials trying to find the suspects. others with him were also arrested without incident. berkeley is being sued over a murder in the berkeley hills this past february. the family of peter cukor claims berkeley police were negligent when cukor called about a trespasser at his home. the suit claims police told cukor an officer was on his way when in fact that was not the case. cukor was killed with a flower pot. the suspect was arrested. police are looking for an armed intruder who terrorized two women in san rafael. investigators say the man entered the playa del rey apartment with a knife on tuesday night as the 18- and 19-

year-old roommates were watching tv. the intruder ended up in a physical strug with one. women and police say one of them stabbed him. he is described as 5'6" hispanic in his early 20s with skin irregularities on the face. some other bay area headlines on this friday the couple accused of murdering a hercules woman in her home is expected to enter a plea in court. darnell and tania washington are accused of killing 55-year- old susie ko on october 5 and then stealing her car. the hearing is this afternoon in richmond. and test results are delayed on whether a bone found earlier this year is that of michaela garecht. a bone fragment was found in linden last february in san joaquin county but test results won't be known for weeks because of turnaround time for labs in arizona and here in the bay area. a potential temporary break today in the attacks in the middle east. israel is offering to suspend the offensive in the gaza strip

as egypt's prime minister pays a brief visit to the region. but fighting between the israelis and palestinians has been escalating. dozens of missiles exploded in gaza city early this morning. they are targeting more than 100 sites that israel says hamas uses to fire rockets at israel. each side says the other is the oppressor. >> thrillly government is not a government of peace. it's a government of war. palestinian health officials say the recent attacks have killed at least 19 people in gaza. israeli officials say three of their people have died. 5:07. former cia director david petreaus is on capitol hill today where he will testify before a congressional committee about september's deadly consulate attack in libya. susan mcginnis joins us now from washington to explain exactly what's happening today. susan, good morning. >> reporter: hi, good morning, frank. petraeus is here in the first of two hearings. he snuck into the first one

without being seen by the press. lawmakers are already questioning him. they may be tempted it talk about the sex scandal but the focus is benghazi. they believe that petraeus has information about what happened there that no one else does. reporter: former cia director david petraeus is headed to capitol hill this morning to talk about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. congressional leaders say he has a unique insight into the attack. >> director petraeus went to tripoli and interviewed many of the people as i understand it that were involved. >> reporter: house and senate intelligence committee members spent thursday interviewing top military and intelligence officials. they were also shown a video taken from surveillance cameras from the consulate and from drones flying overhead. >> it does begin from when the incident --before the incident started and goes through the incident and the exodus. >> reporter: but as thorough as thursday's briefing was, members still have a lot of questions. >> we're going to continue to work to get those answers. >> reporter: and there's new information out of thursday's

congressional hearings. lawmakers say the cia confirmed to them susan rice was told spontaneous protests over an anti-islam film sparked the attack. >> we do not have information at present -- >> reporter: rice was given the information as part of an unclassified briefing before she appeared on sunday morning talk shows five days after the attack. >> that unclassified version turned out to be inaccurate as we found out later. >> reporter: several republican senators are threatening to block rice from become the next secretary of state because of her assertions the attack didn't appear to be pre- planned. now, today's two hearings with petraeus are considered critical to this investigation. but frank, we hear there are at least three more coming after today. >> well, susan, like you said, i would imagine that the petraeus sex scandal will have to come up. are there any new developments

let's get you in for a closer looking an long the peninsula. more of that rain will be picking up throughout the commute hours this morning so be careful on the roads. then we may catch a little bit of a break with more rain to come. out the door cloudy skies, showers already, temperatures in the 50s this afternoon, we are going to see a lot of clouds on-and-off rain throughout the day today even isolated thunderstorms into the evening hours. temperatures will be in the 60s. so the storm door has opened up, a wet weather pattern setting up for the weekend although it doesn't look like it's going to be a rainout the way the storms are timing out. here's the first one. we have a band moving onshore right now maybe a brief break scattered showers in between. and then a stronger band moving in later on this evening and overnight tonight. so the rain will be picking up then and then there's another one that's moving in late saturday. so here we go. we'll time it out. this morning scattered showers out there but pick up in the morning hours and then into the evening it looks like we could see some heavier downpours rotating in the bay area and

that's a possibility of thunderstorms too. scattered showers overnight tonight. then most of saturday chance of off-and-on showers and then the next cold front comes in 9:00 in the evening in the north bay and spreads throughout the bay area overnight on saturday so sunday doesn't look like a rainout either although we could see a couple of scattered showers throughout the day. with that in mind, we are going to see a good dose of rain here as we are going to see rain levels maybe 1.5" plus in the santa cruz mountains with a system moving by. overall maybe 2-plus inches in some parts of the mountains. so nice little soaking from storms rolling through the next couple of days. temperatures in the 60s today. next couple of days, showers in the forecast on saturday. sunday doesn't look too bad we may see more rain overnight saturday into early sunday morning. then drying out on sunday. doesn't look too bad on monday, north bay rain showers, unsettled into wednesday. back to you. 4 people died in a tragic

crash in west texas when the parade float got stuck on train tracks. it was carrying wounded veterans and spouses through the streets of midland, texas. >> i saw the truck crossing the tracks about halfway across, the gate started coming down. the truck tried to blow its horn it get the people in front of him out of the way. the gates actually hit the first people on the trailer. >> 17 other people were injured. a preliminary investigation shows the crossing gate and the lights were working at the time. president obama and congressional leaders are ready to meet today to talk about how to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." the series of tax increases and spending cuts that would kick in january 1 if the house and senate cannot come up with a budget agreement. the main issue dividing democrats and republicans is whether the wealthiest americans should pay a bigger share of taxes.

strike from its workers. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran outside a hostess store in san leandro. is there any hope or is this a done deal? >> actually i was on the phone with a hostess representative and he says this really is a done deal and this means 18,000 employees effectively are out of a job and all baking at hostess facilities has stopped. the company just said that they couldn't keep up with the demand with so many workers off the job. hostess reps say it's the largest -- it was its largest union nationwide strike that crippled operations. the company filed for bankruptcy for the second time and they argue that worker needed to make concessions in order to improve the financial situation. workers wouldn't back down. hostess' largest union rejected a contract offer it made in september. workers said the iconic bakery wanted too much. >> he didn't seem to be scared.

and here to chat about that ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us on a friday. we love friday. >> reporter: yes, we certainly do. good morning, frank and michelle and happy friday to everyone. continued concerns about the "fiscal cliff" in the u.s. slowed down stocks in asia this morning. hong kong's hang seng was up a fraction while tokyo's nikkei bucks the trend with a rally adding more than 2%. wall street a third consecutive decline with weak forecasts and higher unemployment claims. on thursday dow down 28, nasdaq down 9. president obama is meeting with congressional leaders today to discuss the so-called "fiscal cliff." the president is also meeting with 13 heads of civil rights groups to discuss his negotiations with congress to avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts that are set to go into effect on january 1. obama wants tax increases on the wealthy but many republicans say they will not accept higher tax rates. and the red ink gets deeper

for the financially troubled u.s. postal service. the agency reported a record loss of almost $16 billion for the fiscal year that ended on september 30. the postal service is not taxpayer-funded. it blames much of the problems on congress for forcing it to pay a fund for future retiree health benefits. you know, $16 billion, that's a big loss for them. we know they have been struggling but not getting any better. >> not at all. >> doesn't sound like it. ashley, i have to tell you that frank bought himself an early christmas present. just got it in the mail yesterday? >> i got it yesterday. it's the new iphone 5 and i love it. i just can't see it because i can't really see very well. [ laughter ] but they're great. >> reporter: good for you! and that's true. smartphones are expected to be playing a much bigger role this holiday shopping season although, frank, think you got a little jump on it there. "usa today" reports retailers are making increased use of smartphones and other technology. the point is to get consumers to buy in the store though and

not online, although that is much more convenient. they will be doing it by offering discounts and other incentives, all with an app. there's an app for everything. i need an app that will do my grocery shopping. >> frank didn't want to wait in line so he went online. >> i had to wait three weeks to get it but that's the best way to do it and then you have to go to the store to activate it. but all good. all good. i highly recommend it. i'm active. i just can't read it. >> ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com, thank you. >> how do you make the font bigger? >> lawrence i think we need to get him som glasses. >> you can go to cbssf.com and look at our weather right there, high-def doppler radar on your -- well, you can't see it so maybe not, frank. [ laughter ] >> we have showers to start out the day in the bay area. even the high-def doppler radar is big enough for you! you can see the yellows and orange off the coast that's

going to be moving onshore throughout the morning hours. so it's already beginning to affect parts of san francisco and into daly city some rainfall moving in these areas. you're going to see downpours this morning for the commute. be very careful traveling today and the way it's working out kind of tapering off a little bit in between the system and then it looks like this evening coming roaring back onshore. so this morning, we are starting out with cloudy skies, showers outside right now. as we look toward the afternoon hours, temperatures only in the 60s. rain is going to be off and on throughout the day but again, i think by the evening hours it's picking up as another band of moisture moves onshore. the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms too. here we'll try and put it together. we have the wet pattern on the west coast well to the south now. one band onshore now but this band off the coastline will be moving in this evening embedded in there probably heavier storms and even some thunderstorms. now, what's interesting after this though is we have another system dropping right out of the gulf of alaska. this is a stronger one that's going to drop in bringing us more rainfall. speaking of rain, how about

this? into the santa cruz mountains more of a southerly component 1.5" there. and next system a couple of inches of rainfall possible in the bay area and near an inch into san francisco. so that's a good soaking as we head throughout the weekend. still not a total washout but be careful especially heading into the high country. we are expecting some rain with this first one, snow levels going to be fairly high but winter weather advisories going up at about 7,000 feet or so so watch out for that especially saturday. then a colder storm moves in, winter storm watch that snow level going to drop saturday night into sunday. snow levels six to seven thousand feet. temperatures around the bay area today, mainly in the 60s for the weekend. not a complete washout. we'll expect showers, keep that umbrella handy saturday. heaviest rain saturday night into sunday. most of sunday passing clouds maybe an occasional shower then that rain line is going to shift a little further to the north elizabeth, but still a chance of showers, unsettled weather next week.

>> thank you. the slick roads are already causing bad problems on the roads already this morning. so it's a busy friday morning commute. we'll start off with a live look over at the bay bridge. they had to turn the metering lights on. look at that traffic heading up the incline. there's an accident involving five cars on the upper deck of the bay bridge right before the "s" curve so it's slow. it's stacking up already behind the pay gates. they turned the metering lights on, gosh, about a half hour earlier than typical so if you usually commute the bay bridge and are expecting "friday light" traffic, think again. it was actually a stalled-out car several other cars hitting it. that caused a ripple effect. so this is going to take a while to clear. you may want to consider bart or the san mateo bridge this morning. let's go back to our maps. we're also watching a problem on the approach to the bay bridge. actually in emeryville, westbound 80 by powell street this is an accident involving a large big rig. still blocking up to three lanes. so they did issue a traffic alert in that area. several cars actually more than several eight cars in fact struck some sort of metal

debris and so they are off to the right-hand shoulder. they got flat tires. so unfortunately, we're already seeing pretty good sized delays coming down the eastshore freeway. sounds like it's stacked up to university and growing. this is the drive time right now. 23 minutes on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. so once again the problem of the slick roads, this is a live look at the golden gate bridge where this flow of traffic actually looks good from marin to doyle drive. all mass transit is all on time. traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. federal investigators are heading to west texas where a freight train slammed into a parade float that was carrying wounded military veterans. four people were killed. the accident happened as the wounded warriors were taking part in a parade through the city of midland, texas. at least one witness says the float got struck on the tracks. 17 other people were injured. a preliminary investigation shows the crossing gate and the lights were working at the time. it's going to be a little

longer before the first section of high-speed rail track is finished. the rail authority added 12 months to its construction schedule. that pushes the completion date back to the end of 2017. the authority's chief executive says the new timetable will allow contractors to use less overtime. he also says the segment will be built within its $6 billion budget. bart is looking into the future and seeing the need for more trains. bart recently bought 775 train cars for $2.5 billion. but it expects to need 880 cars in the near future to accommodate 500,000 passengers a day. the price tag for that is not known at this time. but bart's director says it's a lot of money and -- [ laughter ] >> -- it's a big problem. >> a lot of money. >> yeah. 5:50. so what do you get when you cross crackerjacks with red bull? a new fangled treat that's got a lot of people talking. >> i imagine. >> and a paperboy who finds himself in quite the predicament. his scary encounter with an

real-life baltimore chased a boy up a tree. >> the black goat's owners say he is a good lawnmower but this week, he got off his chain and he ran away and a 14-year-old on his morning paper route said "baltimore" headbuttedded him off his bike. he climbed a tree to get away and now his friends won't let him forget that. >> it's like everybody they are all hay, goat boy. i'm like hey, guys. were are you scared of goats? that was a freaky goat i think it's possessed or something. >> police were called in when he didn't come home from his route and found him up the truth and baltimore down below. they got the goat cornered got the boy down and i think he may have nibbled on some of his papers, too. >> a freaky goat. >> like it. time to lace up your skates and head to the ice as local outdoor rinks are opening for the season. >> yes. one unique venue is in san jose where downtown ice sits among the circle of palms at fairmont plaza. downtown ice opens at 5 p.m.
